China Daily, a state-backed newspaper, noted that “The US, after the killing of Floyd, seems to be on fire, and troops have been mobilized to subdue angry demonstrators.”

“This is certainly not what the world expects to see in a country that is the world’s sole superpower,” it added. “But that sadly is the reality of the US.”

This rhetoric isn’t just embarrassing for Washington, it’s also a sign of how the US may find its influence damaged by a perceived hypocrisy over human rights at home and abroad.

Earlier today, Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam pointed to the unrest in the US as evidence of Washington’s “double standards.”

“They attach great importance to the national security of their country, but look at our national security through tinted spectacles, especially the current situation in Hong Kong,” she added.

The ability of Washington to influence Beijing’s position on Hong Kong – which is in part founded on fear of outside influence in the city – was already severely limited. The Trump administration’s reaction to protests at home may have hurt its position even further.

“Wicked” director Jon M. Chu couldn’t attend the film’s premiere in Los Angeles, and the reason is quite “wonderful.”

Chu shared on his Instagram Stories that he and his wife Kristin Hodge welcomed their fifth child on Saturday, writing that he “can’t believe this happened while the movie is premiering.”

Chu may not have been able to physically attend the premiere but his presence was felt.

According to footage from inside the theater posted online, a video of Chu speaking from the hospital was played before the movie began.

“I’ve waited for three years to have this moment to share a movie with you but I’ve waited my whole life to have this moment, to have a fifth child right now,” he said in the video, as the audience was heard collectively “aww-ing” at the sentiment.

With a laugh, Chu added that “of course, this little girl knows when to show up.”

Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum round out the ensemble cast.

Part one of “Wicked” will soar in theaters on November 22. The second film is expected in November 2025.

The weather at Huntington Bank Field was the main talking point as the Cleveland Browns hosted division rivals Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football.

What started out as a wintery mix quickly turned to blizzard-like conditions in the second half as the Browns found a way past the Steelers 24-19 following a late touchdown from running back Nick Chubb.

With the kickoff temperature at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the first half was a defensive tug-of-war between both teams.

Steelers kicker Chris Boswell opened the scoring with a 48-yard field goal in the second quarter. But on the ensuing possession, the Browns offense orchestrated a 12-play, 80-yard drive, capped off by a two-yard rushing touchdown by Chubb. Cleveland added a field goal before halftime to go into the locker room with a 10-3 lead.

Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett was a constant thorn in Pittsburgh’s side throughout the first half, with the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year going into the break with three sacks and a forced fumble.

Just as both teams were settling in after halftime, the stadium turned into a winter wonderland as snow blanketed not only the field but fans, players and coaches alike.

Senators bracing for confirmation battles over unorthodox Trump Cabinet picks

Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth warned of Gabbard: “I think she’s compromised.” The Illinois senator brought up Gabbard’s visit to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2017 and policy positions where she’s appeared to mirror Russian propaganda talking points.

But Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin, speaking to Dana Bash on the same show, said such claims were “ridiculous” and “outright dangerous” and called for Duckworth to retract them.

The extraordinary public debate over whether a president-elect’s pick to oversee US intelligence agencies is a compromised asset is a taste of the massive upheaval that likely awaits next year in his second term.

Key questions as Thanksgiving week opens
But it’s far from the only question that Trump’s political comeback has sent swirling around Washington heading into the Thanksgiving holiday this week.

Trump’s pick of Hegseth is also facing uncertainty after the release last week of a 2017 police report detailing an alleged sexual assault in California. The former Fox News anchor says the encounter with a woman in California was consensual. He denies wrongdoing and was not charged.
One big unknown is whether Republican senators are again prepared to challenge Trump’s judgment after it quickly became clear that Gaetz wouldn’t have enough of their votes to be confirmed amid his own sexual misconduct allegations, which he denies. One theory is that the incoming GOP majority won’t simply be a rubber stamp for an all-powerful president. But the withdrawal of Gaetz — who was already widely disliked in Congress — may leave senators feeling they owe the president-elect on his other highly controversial choices.
Trump’s new selection for attorney general, Pam Bondi, is meanwhile being welcomed by many Republicans, suggesting she’ll have an easier path to confirmation than Gaetz. But the former Florida attorney general’s past vow that “prosecutors will be prosecuted” raised expectations that the president-elect plans to press ahead with his promise to use the powers of the Justice Department to seek retribution on those who have investigated him, including over his attempt to steal the 2020 election.
A sense that the president-elect is deeply serious about his vow to gut government was bolstered by the choice on Friday night of Russell Vought to again lead the Office of Management and Budget. Vought was one of the key authors of Project 2025 — the conservative blueprint disavowed by Trump on the campaign trail that involved a defenestrating of the bureaucracy. Trump has already tasked Tesla pioneer Elon Musk and former GOP primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy with drawing up massive government cuts.
